How did Alexander Fleming discover penicillin
Alexander Fleming discovered Penicillin, the first antibiotic by pure accident. One of his bacterial culture in the laboratory became contaminated with a patch of mould called Pencillium. Before throwing the contaminated culture, he noticed that no bacteria were growing near the mould. He assumed that Penicillium must have released a substance that kills off bacteria. To counter check his hypothesis he grew some pure Penicillium in a liquid medium, filtered out the moulkd and applied it on uncontaminated bacterial culture. He observed that the bacteria in the culture got killed by the mould extract. Further research of these mould extracts resulted in the production of Penicillin.
