Why are the buttons in ladies garments on the left side, while in men’s clothes on the right side?
When buttons were introduced in the 13th century, they were very expensive. Only the ladies belonging to very rich families could afford it. These ladies were dressed by their maids. The buttons on their dresses were on the left side so that they would be on the right hand side of the maid standing in front of them. Since the men dressed up them-selves they had buttons on the right hand side of their clothes. Also it was easier for the men to unbutton their coats quickly to draw out their sword which hung on their left. With the buttons on the right side it was convenient for them to unbutton their coats with the left hand keeping their right hard free for the sword.
