Bob Dylan
Bob Dylan (1941), US singer and songwriter. Born Robert Zimmerman, he is thought to have taken his new surname from the poet Dylan Thomas. He started ‘ singing in New York folk clubs and released his first record in 1962. He is best known for his classics of the 1960’s, including the political songs ‘Blowing in the Wind’ and ‘The Times They are A-Changin”, as well as the rock-influenced ‘Like a Rolling Stone’. The complex lyrics of such songs as ‘Mr. Tambourine Man’ were ac-claimed by critics. By the early 1970’s his voice and style had mellowed and his songs became less angry. His later albums include Blood on the Tracks (1975), Desire (1976), Slow Train Coming (1979), which reveals his conversion to Christianity, Oh Mercy (1989), and World Gone Wrong (1994).
