Dwight D.Eisenhower
Dwight D.Eisenhower (1890-1969), US general and 34th president of the US. Having graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point in 1915, he commanded a tank training centre in World War I. During World War II he was rapidly promoted, be-coming chief of the Allied forces in North Africa (1942-43) and supreme commander of the Allied invasion of Europe (1944). He was nicknamed ‘Ike’ by his men. Elected US president in 1952, he was re-elected for a second term in 1956. A Republican, Eisenhower presided over important advances in civil rights and at-tempted to revitalize the economy. Internationally, his presidency was dominated by the continuing Cold War with the Soviet Union. He retired in 1960.
