Sergei Eisenstein
Sergei Eisenstein (1898-1948), Russian film director. In the 1920’s he pioneered new techniques of film editing, producing a number of films noted for their beautifully composed scenes and vivid images. Battleship Potemkin (1925) and October (Ten Days that Shook the World) (1927) deal with contemporary political themes relating to the Russian Revolution. By contrast Alexander Nevsky (1938), which includes a battle on a frozen lake, and Ivan the Terrible (in two parts, 1944-46) are epic dramas based on Russian history.
