Dewal Devi
Dewal Devi, early 14th cent., princess of Gujarat. She was the daughter of Karnadeva, the last Chalukyan ruler of Gujarat. Her mother, Kamala Devi, was seized by sultan Ala-ud-Din Khilji, in about 1297, and she, along with her father sought refuge with Ramachandra, the ruler of Devagiri. Her mother, who had become the favourite wife of the Sultan, requested Ala-ud-Din for the capture of her daughter also. In about 1307, Dewal Devi was kidnapped and whisked off to Delhi by the soldiers of the sultan and married off to his son, Khizr Khan. In about 1316, her husband was killed by Khusru Shah, and she was compelled to marry the murderer. But Khusru Shah was himself killed in 1320, after a very short reign.. The poet, Amir Khusru, has woven his Ashiqa out of this episode.
