George V
George V (1865-1936) King of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The second son of Edward VII, he served in the navy until the death of his brother (1892) made him heir to the throne. He married Mary of Teck in 1893 and succeeded to the throne in 1910. With World War I he renounced all German titles and the royal house became known as Windsor. He visited the Western Front several times and took an active part in war policy, gaining considerable public respect. In 1932 he broadcast the first Christmas message to the nation, a tradition continued to the present day.
