Oliver Goldsmith
Oliver Goldsmith (1730-74), Irish poet, novelist, and dramatist. A friend of Samuel Johnson, he spent most of his life in poverty. He rose to fame with a series of newspaper articles but enjoyed his greatest success with the comedy She Stoops to Conquer (1773). He is also remembered for the poem The Deserted Village (1770) and his novel The Vicar of Wakefield (1766).
