Mangla
Mangla, 1835, confidate of Rani Jindan of Punjab. She was the daughter of a water-carrier of Kangra, in Himachal Pradesh, and was emplo)ed as a domestic servant by Rani Jindan of Punjab, in 1835. After the death of Ranjit Singh (1839) she became a confidante of Rani Jindan and came to occupy an important place in contemporary politics as keeper of her seals, and also acted as her official personal assistant. It was rumoured that she was the go-between Rani Jindan and her lover Lal Singh. Mangla herself was the mistress of Jindan’s brother, Jawahar Singh. This created a scandal at the Sikh court.
