Muktabai
Muktabai, 1297. Marathi saint and poet. Sister of Saint Janes war, she was left an orphan along with her three brothers when her parents drowned themselves in the Ganga after being ostracized for a spiritual lapse. The children were also out-casted though they were allowed to stay at their home in Alandi near Pune. The children, to escape prorsecution, left for Newase in Ahmednagar district, where the eldest brother Nivritti was introduced to the mystries of the Nath panth. He, in turn, initiated his brothers and sister to spiritual life. Muktabai became well-versed in Vedanta, and also wrote a number of hymns and psalms in Marathi, for which she is famous.
