Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy
Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy, 1886-1968, social worker. First woman medical graduate of Madras University, she soon built up a large practice, but later gave it up to work for the social uplift of women. She was also closely associated with Women’s Indian Association and All India Women’s Conference. She was nominated to the Legislative Council of Madras in 1927, and was also elected as Deputy Speaker. She resigned in 1930 in protest against the arrest of Mahatma Gandhi. She also presided over the All Asian Women’s Conference in 1933, and was a delegate from India to the International Conference of Women in France. She gave evidence before the Joint Parliamentary Committee in London, along with Sarojini Naidu, in 1933. She was awarded Padma Bhushan in 1956.
