Meyer Guggenheim
Meyer Guggenheim (182871905), US industrialist, born in Switzerland. In 1847 he went to the US and by 1901 he dominated the mining industry there. Of his seven sons, Daniel (1856-1930) established the Daniel and Florence Guggenheim Foundation for the promotion of “the well-being of mankind” (1924) and founded a school of aeronautics at New York University (1925). Simon (1867-1941) established a foundation to assist artists and scholars, while Solomon (1861-1.949) founded the Guggenheim Museum of Art in New York City.
