Nandini Satpathy
Nandini Satpathy, 1931- , political and social worker. Originally a communist worker of Orissa, she was very prominent in workers’ movement and social work particularly amongst women and children. She later joined the Congress Party and was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1962 and again in 1968. She also served as deputy minister from 1966 to 1970, and Minister of State for broadcasting-from 1971 to 1973. In June 1972 she became the chief minister of Orissa, but was forced out of office in 1976 because of her differences with the prime minister, Indira Gandhi. She again won the elections of 1977, though she was involved in charges of corruption.
