Urmila Devi
Urmila Devi,1883-1956, political and social worker. She was born in a prosperous Hindu family of Dacca, and was the sister of Chittranjan Das, the great leader. She was married to Ananta Narayan Sen but was widowed. in 1920. Drawn into the national movement because of her association with her brother, she participated in the Non-Cooperation Movement and was arrested, along with her sister-in-law, Basanti Devi, for selling Khadhi, and organizing the boycott of the Prince of Wales in December 1921. In 1930, she was again arrested for picketing foreign cloth shops. She was again re-arrested for pleading the cause of the detenues and placed under house-arrest! She was intensely interested in Harijan welfare, and despite her age, she toured Noakhali, on a peace mission along with Mahatma Gandhi, following the communal strife, in 1946.
