Hereward the Wake
Hereward the Wake (fl. 1070). English chieftain and hero. A Lincolnshire landowner, he led the Anglo-Saxon rebellion against William the Conqueror (1070-71). Although William captured Hereward’s stronghold on the Isle of Ely (1071), Hereward managed to escape across the marshes with a handful of companions. His subsequent fate is unknown.
