Henry James
Henry James, (1843-1916). US novelist. Born into a literary family in New York, he was a well-known re-viewer and short-story writer by the age of 22. From 1876 he lived in Europe and in 1915 he became a British subject. His early novels include The Portrait of a Lady (1881). The Turn of the Screw (1898) is a supernatural tale of two children possessed by the evil souls of their former servants. James’s style became more complex and symbolic in his later works, such as The Golden Bowl (1904). His experiments with drama were unsuccessful.
