Kublai Khan

Kublai Khan (1215-94). Mongol emperor of China, grandson of Genghis Khan. He succeeded his brother Mangu in 1259 and by 1279 had conquered the whole of China, ending the Sung dynasty. His attempts to extend his rule with invasions of Java and Japan were unsuccessful. He was also a patron of literature and established Buddhism as the state religion.
