Lucretius
Lucretius, full name Titus Lucretius Carus (c. 94-55 BC). Roman poet. In his poem On the Nature of Things he puts forward the materialist philosophy of Epicurus, arguing that fear of the gods is the chief obstacle to human happiness. He is said to have committed suicide in a fit of madness.
