Socrates
Socrates (469-399 BC). Greek philosopher, the founder of Western moral philosophy. He devoted his life to showing up the absurdity of conventional opinions and spent much of his time discussing the notions of right and wrong with young men, poets, and politicians. When some of his followers conspired against the democratic government, Socrates was tried and condemned to death for atheism and corrupting the young. He died in prison by drinking hemlock. Al-though he wrote nothing himself, his disciple Plato gives a vivid picture of his courage, integrity, and humour.
