Jonathan Swift
Jonathan Swift, (1667-1745). Irish poet, satirist, and prose writer. He was ordained in 1695 and in 1713 be-came Dean of St Patrick’s, Dublin. His works include A Tale of a Tub (written 1696-99) and the political satire Gulliver’s Travels (1726), now largely read as a children’s book. Journal to Stella (1710-13) is a series of letters written to Hester Johnson, a lifelong friend. He also wrote a number of pamphlets protesting at Britain’s policy in Ireland. After 1739 he was paralysed and unable to speak.
