Maurice Utrillo
Maurice Utrillo, (1883-1955). French painter. The illegitimate son of an artist’s model, Utrillo received his name from Miguel Utrillo, a Spanish art critic. After he became an alcoholic and drug addict at an early age, his mother encouraged him to paint as a form of therapy. He developed an original style and usually portrayed streets and buildings, frequently basing his pictures on postcards. Many of his best-known works show scenes from the Montmartre district of Paris.
