James Wolfe
James Wolfe, (1727-59). British general. Having helped to put ‘down the 1745 rebellion in Scotland, he was sent to command British forces fighting the French for control of North America during the Seven Years’ War (1756-63). In 1758 he took Louisbourg in Nova Scotia, and a year later he successfully besieged Quebec. There he surprised the defenders by sending troops up a steep unguarded path from the St Lawrence River on to the Plains of Abraham beside the city. Although he was killed during this battle, his victory led eventually to British supremacy in Canada.
