Revenge is a kind of wild justice. It is invariably attended with imbalance and fury. Wild justice is the one in which only wild animals indulge. It excludes forgiveness, charity and tolerance. Its watchword is: “an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.” Its spirit is that of violence. Revenge, in other words, is brutish. It is ‘tit for ‘tat’. Revenge sets into motion a vicious circle to which there is no end. It leaves a problem much more complicated, sometimes bloodstained even. Revengefulness is the continuation of the beast within man. It may result even in the murder of people. Revenge only creates anarchy and indiscipline. It is unconstitutional. It often amounts to taking law in one’s own hands. As civilization grows, revenge declines and justice based on charity and mercy takes its place.a
