To travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive
This statement puts a philosophical metaphor in simple terms. There is no doubt that it is the existence of the goal which makes travel possible and we travel on so long as we hope that we would reach the goal. But when the goal is reached, effort ceases. It is common to experience that pleasure lies in the expectation of the fulfillment of a desire and not in its actual fulfillment. Tagore has amplified this philosophy admirably in one of his works. He holds out that eternal peace is unattainable and that is why its pursuance is pleasurable. But that does not apply to every goal. No one would hold that it is better to continue to work for bread than to get it and eat it.
