What is written without effort is in general read without pleasure?
It is a common conception that literature and art are the creation of intuition. The poets and artists are inspired and their pen or brush just pictures the state of their minds. No conscious effort is involved on the part of the poet. Rishi Vyas is said to have dictated the whole of Mahabharata in one sitting without pre-meditation. Milton dictated his Paradise Lost in a similar way. It is a disqualification with art if it smacks of effort. But, on the other hand, there are many poets and artists who have made great efforts to improve their art, and some of them are read with great pleasure. Shelley believed in the effort. Success, they say, is ninety percent perspiration and only ten percent inspiration.
