My City
Delhi is my city. It is like a legend. It has many monuments representing various phases of its long history. It had been the seat of many empires. Delhi is made of seven historical cities. These cities are the following:- Mehrauli, Siri, Tughlaqabad, Jahanpanah, Kotla Feroz Shah, Purana Qila (Sher Shah’s city) and Shahjahanabad (Old Delhi).
The Britishers built their capital at Raisina in 1912, which is called New Delhi. It has the President’s House, Connaught Place, Parliament, Secretariats, India Gate, Central Vista and numerous gardens. Its architect was Sir Edwin Lutyens. After the Independence, many colonies were developed in and around the seven historical cities of Delhi.
The population of Delhi is about 120 lakhs. It is one of the largest city in India, along with Mumbai and Kolkata. It covers a vast area of about 1485 square kilometers. It is the capital of the country. It has large number of forests, parks and playgrounds. The Ridge is the city forest in the midst of the city.
It has large markets, like Connaught place, Chandni Chowk and Karol Bagh. It has many colleges, hospitals, schools, temples, mosques and clubs. People of all religions, caste and colour live here without discrimination. It has the largest number of vehcles in the country. It has embassies of almost every country of the world.
Emperor Shahjehan, like many others, loved Delhi. He wrote the following inscription on the wall of the Diwan-i-khas at Red Fort:
“If there be paradise upon the earth, It is here, It is here, It is here.”
Living in Delhi may not be like living in the paradise, but it is a privilege to live in the capital of the largest democracy of the world.
