How do the Deer shed their antlers?

The Deer shed their antlers every winter and grow a new pair every spring. These antlers are covered with a fine skin called  velvet which is filled with blood vessels nourish the antlers while they grow. Once they attain their full size, the blood supply to the velvet is cut off. The formation of a ring of dead tissue at the base makes the antlers dry up and Ian down.
