How does the Sun shine?
The Sun is a giant ball of hot, glowing gases. At the intensely hot centre of the Sun, the process of nuclear fusion converts four atoms of hydrogen into one atom of helium. During this process some matter is lost and a considerable amount of nuclear energy is released. This energy is spread out in all directions as electromagnetic waves and makes the Sun shine. Six million tons of hydrogen is converted into helium and thereby four million tons of matter is converted into energy every second. This is how Sun gives us light and heat.
