How much does the atmosphere weight?
The earth is surrounded by a thick blanket of air called the atmosphere. The atmosphere is a mixture of gases, water vapour and dust particles. Since air has weight so does the atmosphere. In fact, if it could be compressed and then weighed, it would be around 5,171,000,000,000,000 tonnes! Air having so much weight exerts a pressure on us from all the sides and we don’t feel the pressure because our bodies are built to cope up with it. Air pressure is maximum at sea level and reduces as we go up to high altitudes.
