Who was the first Sultan of Delhi?
Qutb-ud-din succeeded Muhammad Ghori as sovereign of the new Indian conquests and from 1206 he might be reckoned as the first Sultan of Delhi.
Qutb-ud-din sought to strengthen his position by marriage alliances with influential rival chiefs. He himself married the daughter of Taj-ud-din Yildiz, Governor of Kirman, and he gave his sister to Nasir-ud-din Qubacha, the Governor of Sind. Iltutmish, foremost of his slaves, married Qutb-ud-din’s daughter.
