Violet Alva
Violet Alva, 1908-69, social and political leader. An Indian Christian, she was actively associated with the struggle for freedom and imprisoned for her role in the Quit India Movement of August 1942. She was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1952, 1960 and 1966. She also served as the deputy chairman of the Rajya Sabha, and deputy minister of home affairs from 1957 to 1962. She was a member of various national and international bodies, and represented India at many international conferences. She also visited many foreign countries as a member of the Indian delegation.
