Andal
Andal, fl. 9th cent., Vaishnavite saint and poet. Daughter of the saintly Periazhwar of Srivilliputtur, near Madurai, in South India, she showed mystic tendencies even in her childhood. She remained unmarried and chose to spend her life in constant devotion to Lord Krishna. She wrote many beautiful verses and lyrics which are still remembered. She is also the author of an autobiography Tirumozhi (`Sacred Utterance’) about her spiritual experiences.
