Chand Bibi
Chand Bibi, d. 1599, queen-regent of Bijapur. She was the daughter of Hussain Nizam Shah of Ahmadnagar and was married to Ali Adil Shah of Bijapur. On the death of her husband in 1580 she became the queen-regent to her minor son, Ibrahim Adil Shah, and the real ruler of the kindom. In 1584 she returned to Ahmadnagar, and never visited Bijapur again. She valiantly defended Ahmadnagar with masculine determination against the armies of Emperor Akbar, in 1596, led by Prince Murad and ultimately purchased peace by cessation of Berar. She was assassinated in 1599 because of internal dissensions, and Ahmadnagar fell to the Mughals.
