Chennammji
Chennammji, 1702, Queen of Keladi, Vijayanagar. Wife of Somashekhara Nayaka, who along with his brother, Bhadrappa Nayaka, had established themselves in Keladi after the disintegration of the Vijayanagar empire, she ruled jointly with her husband. After the death of her husband in 1677, she took over as the sole ruler. She was a courageous woman and gave shelter to Rajaram, the son of Shivaji, and successfully resisted the army of Aurangzeb which had entered the State t o capture him. She was also a patron of learning.
