Devi
Devi, 3rd cent., B.C., queen of Asoka. Daughter of a merchant, of Bedisa (now in Madhya Pradesh) she caught the eye of young Asoka (d. 232 B.C.) when he halted at Bedisa on his way to. Ujjain to take over the viceroyalty of South India. Two children were born of this marriage ; a son, Mahinda, and a daughter, Sanghmitta, who were sent as the Emperor’s envoy to Sri Lanka for propagation of Buddhism. Probably the stupa at Sanchi has some association with her.
