Luxose, Mary Poonem
Luxose, Mary Poonem, 1881, first women Surgeon-General of India. Born in Kerala, in a family of medical practitioners, she was the first woman graduate of Madras University (1909). She took her medical degree from U.K., as, being a woman she could not secure any admission in an Indian university. In 1924, she became the incharge of the health department of the Travancore State, and in 1938, she became the Surgeon-General, the first woman to hold the post. She also established the first X-ray institution and the first radium ward.
