Maham Anga
Maham Anaga, 1562, Mughal nurse. She was the chief nurse of infant Akbar (b. 1542) and became his foster-mother. She came to exercise great influence over the Emperor during the`petticoat government’ from 1560 to 1562, and her son, Adham Khan was appointed the prime minister. In May 1562 Akbar took all powers in his own hands, which was not liked by Maham Anaga. She was particularly displeased over the recall of her son Adham Khan, and the appointment of Atga Khan as the new prime minister. On 16 May 1562, her son, Adham Khan, stabbed the new minister, for which Akbar had the culprit hurled down from the terrace and killed. Though she said to the Emperor that he did well, Maham Anaga died of grief 40 days later. She was buried in a noble mausoleum built by Akbar at Delhi.
