Maharani Tapasvini
Maharani Tapasvini, d. 1907, freedom-fighter. She was the daughter of Narayan Rao of Belur, in Arcot, and was a neice of Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhonsi. Because of her participation in the revolt of 1857 she was interned in TriChur. On her release she studied Sanskrit and Yoga and went to Nepal where she established close relations with the royal family. She also advised Tilak to establish contacts with Nepal. She later came to Bengal and established a Sanskrit pathshala, and became prominent in the cause of female education.
