Mai Desan
Mai Desan, d.1778, Sikh princess of Sukerchakia misl. Daughter of Amir Singh of Gujranwala, she was married to Charat Singh, the grandfather of Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab. She was a courageous woman and after the accidental death of her husband in 1774, she acted as the ruler of the State during the minority of her son, Maha Singh, till 1780. She rebuilt the fort of Gujranwala which had been destroyed by the Afghan invader, Ahmad Shah Abdali, and restored friendship between warring Sikh factions. She was put to death in the winter of 1778 by her own son, who had suspected her of immorality. She is also called Mai Wazirbadia.
