Padmavati
Padmini, or Padmavati, d.1303, Rajput princess. Queen of Rana Ratan Singh of Chittor, she was celebrated all over the country for her beauty. Sultan Ala-ud-Din Khilji of Delhi was so smitten by her charms, after being allowed to look at her reflection in a mirror, that he invaded the kingdom, only to find that the queen and her party have immolated themselves. The episode has been imaginatively described by Malik Mohammad Jayasi in the celebrated Hindi epic Padmavat written in 1540.
