Rajinder Kaur

Rajinder Kaur, d. 1791, Ran! of Phagwara, Punjab. She was a cousin of Raja Amar Singh of Patiala (d. 1781) and had earlier helped him in his difficulties. After his death, when Dewan Nanu Mal was ousted, she advanced upon Patiala and reinstated the Dewan. She also had close contacts with the Mahratha forces encamping nearby. With the departure of the Mahrathas, the new ruler, Maharaja Sahib Singh, again ousted the Dewan. The Rani also developed differences with him because of his refusal to pay the levy demanded by the Mahrathas and even seized his son, Devi Ditta and open hostilities were narrowly averted. Though she met the Sindhia at Mathura, she had lost her earlier influence, and Maharaja Sahib Singh refused to meet her. She is regarded as the most remarkable woman of her times.
