Rani Rashmoni
Rani Rashmoni, 1793-1861, philanthrophist. She was the daughter of Harekrishna Das, a labourer who lived in Halishahat, in 24-Parganas. Her mother died when she was only seven. She was married in 1804 to Rajachandra, a son of very rich father, who had fallen in love with her, but was widowed in 1836. She used her enormous wealth for charitable purposes. She acquired a piece of land at Dakshineshwar in 1847 where she built a temple, aid engaged Gadabhar, later famous as Ramakrishna, as the priest. She was often involved in conflict with the East India Company, and with indigo planters. She is still remembered in Bengal for her charities and acts of piety.
