Roopmati
Roopmati, d. 1562. courtesan and poet. A favourite of Baz Bahadur, the ruler of Malwa, she was universally celebrated for her beauty and charm. After the defeat of her lover, and the annexation of Malwa (1561-62) by Akbar, she committed suicide to escape falling into the hands of the Mughal general, Adham Khan. The celebrated romance of Baz Bahadur and Rupmati is, the subject of many legends and paintings. She was also a gifted poet and a singer.
