Saguna Bai

Saguna Bai, d. 1748, Mahratha princess. Youngest of the four wives of Raja Shahu, the grandson of Shivaji, she was married to him at Purandar in May 1707, on his return from release from Mughal captivity. She, along with the elder queen, Sakwar Bai, constantly carried on intrigues and interfered with the adminis tration, which very much saddened the last years of Raja Shahu, (d. 1749). She died of a prolonged illness at Jejuri on 25 August 1748 where she had been removed for reasons of health. She bore him one son (b. 1727) but he died in infancy.
