Samyogita
Samyogita or Sanjogta, d.1192, Rajput princess. Daughter of Raja Jaichand of Kanauj, she chose Prithviraj (Rai Pithora) of Ajmer for her husband in an open assembly (Swainvara) despite the opposition of her father, and eloped with him (ca. 1175). According to tradition Prithviraj was not invited to the assembly of eligible princes and his effigy was put instead, and Sarnyogita placed the garland round it. Thereupon. she was seized by Prithviraj waiting outside, who placed her on his horse and escaped. She sacrificed her life by mounting the funeral pyre when her husband was defeated and killed at the second battle of Tarain in 1192, at the hands of Muhammad Ghuri. Their romance is still celebrated.
