Shah Turkan, d. 1236, Afghan princess. Wife of Sultan Iltutmish (d. 1236) she was a very ambitious lady, and tried to place her worthless son, Rukn-ud-Din on the throne of Delhi, despite her husband’s nomination of his daughter Razia. During a few months of her son’s rule, she virtually controlled the government, she murdered every one of the Sultan’s women, and also tried to kill his sons. Rukn-ud-Din was later deposed, and she along with her son, was imprisoned. Nevertheless, she was known for her benevolence, and patronage of learning.
