The Mother
The Mother, 1878-1973. Mystic, French devotee of Sri Aurobindo. Originally named Mira Richards, she was born in France on 21 February 1878, and practised Yoga from the age of four. She first met Sri Aurobindo in 1914 after his retirement from political life. She came to Pondicherry in 1920 and joined the ashrama which Sri Aurobindo had established there. In 1926 she took charge of the ashrama and came to be known simply as the Mother. She was worshipped as a saint, and exercised profound influence on spiritual life and thought of the people.
