Sushila Nayyar
Sushila Nayyar, 1914- , Political worker and physician. Daughter of Biindaban and Tara Devi, she was born at Kunjah, in Pakistan, on 26 December 19 4. She was educated at Lahore, Delhi and America, and became a medical attendant to Mahatma Gandhi, and worked at his ashram at Sevagram. She took part in freedom movement and was imprisoned along with Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturba. She also attended on Mahatma Gandhi during his twenty-one day fast in February 1943. Elected to the Lok Sabha in 1957 she was Minister of Health from 1962 to 1967. She had also been connected with various peace organizations and social welfare committees. She later retired from active politics, and settled as professor of social and preventive medicine at the medical college in Sevagram. She has remained unmarried.
