Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener
Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener (1850-1916). British field marshal. His victory over the Mahdi at Omdurman (1898) ended the war in the Sudan. He also played a decisive role in the Boer War (1899-1902), with his anti-guerrilla tactics. In 1914 he was made secretary for war and used his popularity to raise the vast army that fought in World War I. He was drowned when the cruiser on which he was travelling sank near the Orkneys.
