Adam, Robert
Adam, Robert (1728-92). Scottish architect, the second son of William Adam, a leading Edinburgh architect, who trained him and his two brothers, John (1721-92) and James (1730-94). On his Grand Tour of Europe (1754-58) Robert studied classical architecture, which influenced his later work. Back in Britain, he concentrated particularly on interior decoration, evolving the so-called ‘Adam style’ with his brother James. They also designed furniture and fittings. His works include the interiors of Harewood House (1759-71) and Syon House (1762-69), and the Adelphi, London (1768-72, now demolished).
